Picking a good garage door is an important choice. It’s one of the first things people see when they look at your home. Here are a few things to consider when buying a garage door:
Garage Door Materials
Wood offers a look and charm that other materials can only imitate. Wood doors are highly customizable – they can be made in whatever size, colour, and design you like. Their downside is that they require regular repainting, especially if you live in a wet climate. Wood doors usually have short warranties – sometimes only one year.
Metal is a better choice than wood if you don’t want a lot of maintenance. Steel is strong and relatively inexpensive. Steel rusts, however, so you’ll need to touch up scratches promptly. High-quality steel doors may have lifetime warranties.
– Aluminum Frame Doors
Garage doors fitted with aluminum panels don’t rust, but they are easier to dent and are not quite as sturdy as steel. They are, however available in a variety of colours and designs.
– Vinyl Doors
Vinyl garage doors are often marketed as being kid-proof because they’re dent-resistant. They are durable and require little maintenance outside of an occasional rinse.
Garage Doors Types
– Retractable Garage Doors
Automatic retractable garage doors are single panel doors that fully retract using horizontal tracks running across your garage’s ceiling. All automatic retractable garage doors require an overhanging garage door opener that will shrink the available height in your garage. Retractable garage doors tend to require more space inside your garage than other options.
– Roller Garage Door
Roller garage doors are a compact solution built out of corrugated steel panels. The corrugated panels allow the entire garage door to roll up into a box atop the garage. They do not have horizontal tracks like retractable garage doors, meaning you have more garage space and storage room. Roller style garage doors are more expensive than other door types. On the plus side, roller garage doors are very durable, secure, and require little maintenance once installed.
– Sectional Garage Doors
Sectional garage doors are the most popular design of garage door on the market. A sectional garage door uses both vertical and horizontal tracks to lift and close the door.
They are typically made up of three to eight large panels and can be thought of as a middle ground between single-panel designs and roller doors. Sectionals do tend to cost more than retractable ones as they require multiple tracks and a number of parts for operation. Frequent lubrication and maintenance are necessary to keep your sectional door running smoothly.
